I grew up on the 4th floor of a council flat in Brixton. When my parents divorced, pops wasn't around to do the painting and decorating like he used to. So to cover up the tears in my bedroom wallpaper, I tore posters out of the hip hop magazines my big cuz gave me, and papered over them. Surrounded by portraits of people that looked like the people in my family but adorned with a lot more diamonds, might've had an effect on me. Waking up in that bedroom everyday was definitely an immersive and aspirational experience.
Looking back, there were at least two lessons it allowed me to learn. That paper can make a mess. And paper can be a luxury.
